If it is your first time playing tchoukball, you may not know the rule whether it is legal for a shooter to catch his or her own shot off of the rounder or frame. Here, we have the rules of playing tchoukball so that you will know if this thing is legal or not.

This sport consists of two teams of 7 players each. They compete to score points with the team. The team who can get the most points at the end is the winner of this game. When a team gets a point, control of the ball will be moved to the other team.

May a Shooter Catch His or Her Own Shot Off of the Rebounder or Frame

In this sport, either team is able to score at either end of the court. A point will be obtained if there is a ball which rebounds after hitting either of the 2 frames and touches the ground outside the forbidden zone, any part of the defending player’s body below the knees or if it touches the defending player when he is still in the forbidden zone. When the attacking team shoots and misses the frame or the ball rebounds outside the playing area, a point will be given to the non-attacking team. If there is a shot which is caught by the defending team, the defending team is able to proceed to attack quickly.

In the website of Dublin K 12, it is stated that if the other team does not catch the ball off the rebounder, the team with the ball gets a point. Then, the other team will get a point if the shooter does the things below.

  • The rebound surface is missed  by the shooter when he shoots the ball.
  • The  ball is shooted by the shooter and it bounces back, touching him.
  • The ball is sent by the shooter into the forbidden zone, before or after it hits the rebound surface.

How about the penalties? A player gets a penalty if he does the things below.

  • Taking more than 3 steps when he is in possession of the ball.
  • Making a fourth pass for his team.
  • Going into the forbidden zone when holding the ball.
  • Dropping the ball after it is passed to him.
  • Catching a pass from the other team voluntarily or by error.
  • Catching a ball off of the rebound surface that was shot by one of his teammates.
  • Blocking his opponents from moving or stops them from freely passing the ball if they have got possession.

There are also particular rules as you are able to see in the list below.

  • There are no designed sides which means that each team may be able to shoot the ball at either rebound.
  • If a player intercepts a pass from the other team, it is illegal.
  • Before shot, no more than three passes.
  • Do not step more than three steps by a player holding the ball.
  • Do not hold the ball more than 3 seconds.

Court of Tchoukball

Usually, the size of the court which is used is 27 m x 17 m. But, this is not the only size. There are variations to the size. Let’s say you will play this sport on the beach,  the size of the court is 21 m x 12 m. At each end of the field of play, the frame of one rebound is put. In front of each frame, there is a D shaped semi-circle. It measures 3 m in radius which needs to be drawn. This semi-circle defines the limits of the forbidden zone. The part of the zone itself are the lines of the zones. The line which marks the semicircle forbidden zone is a part of the forbidden zone and the line around the whole court is a part of the court.

Ball Used in Tchoukball

After knowing the size of the court, now you need to know about the ball. Is there an exact size of the ball to use in this sport? The answer is depending on the category of players. So, the size of balls are different which ranges from a circle of 54 cm to 60 cm and the weight is between 325 grams to 475 grams.

Tchoukball is a team sport of 7 players where there is a combination of all key sporting skills such as concentration, athleticism, respect for oneself and the opposition and teamwork. This sport is an indoor team sport and a Swiss biologist named Hermann Brandt was the one who developed this sport  in the 1970s. The reason why he developed this sport is because he was concerned by a number of serious injuries among athletes. He thought that usually sports were prone to aggression and physical contact. So, he further thought that sports should be not only for being a winner, but also to contribute to the creation of a better and more humane society.

This sport has elements of some sports such as handball, volleyball and squash. Now, this sport has become an international sport which is played in a lot of countries such as Cameron, Canada, China, the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Brazil, Argentina, Hongkong, Great Britain, Italy, India, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Spain, Singapore, Taiwan, Switzerland, Macau, Pakistan, Niger, Poland, Tunisia, Thailand, Uruguay, Vietnam and the United States.

Every player in this sport must fill the Positions as you can see in the list below.

  • There are 2 right shooters.
  • There are 2 left shooters.
  • There are 2 or 3 defenders.
  • There is 1 centre or none if there are 3 defenders which are used.

Each side of the court has  a left shooter, right shooter and 1 or 2 defenders. The centre usually stays close to the middle of the court of this formation. Generally, the shooters have the responsibility to shoot even though in some cases the defender can also take the shot. The defenders are responsible for coordinating the first line of defence. How about the centre pivot? This position is responsible for the second line of defence.
